BluOx Science
Only BluOx can produce a cold water wash using half the chemicals, half the water, in one-third less time.
The science behind BluOx is based on special washer/extractors modified to be able to use cold water super-saturated with high levels of dissolved ozone coupled with unique ozone injection equipment capable of delivering high levels of ozonated water virtually throughout the entire wash cycle. BluOx safely applies 5 to 10 times as much ozone as any of the leading ozone laundry systems. (Patent Pending)
The Concept
We discovered that when washing with high levels of ozone, the most effective method is to wash without adding any builder/alkali and without any bleaching agent other than the ozone. The BluOx process achieves more bleaching in five minutes of high levels of ozone than is achieved in a standard 30 minute wash formula with hot water and chlorine bleach.
The Process
People familiar with laundering know that much of the rinsing is done to remove all the residual alkali and chlorine bleach that was added in the first place. Since BluOx doesn't use alkali or chlorine, there is no need for the excessive rinsing. The result for hotel room linen is a 7-9 minute wash with a touch of detergent followed by a 4-6 minute rinse. Shorter wash cycles mean more pounds per hour can be produced. In fact, a 100 pound washer modified for BluOx can produce the same pounds per hour as a 150 lb traditional washer, while saving the owner over $20,000 a year in operating costs.
Washer Modifications
In order to accommodate the higher levels of ozone without creating issues in the work area from ozone off-gas, the ports on the washer that are normally open to atmosphere or that are not air tight needed to be addressed. These ports include the vent, the overflow line and the chemical injection box. Without going into too much detail, these areas have all been addressed so that ozone cannot bleed into the workplace. All code requirements such as vacuum breakers, etc. have been maintained and are in compliance. The BluOx B&C, Jensen and Milnor washers are specialty lines supplied complete with modifications by the washer manufacturer. For Unimac washers, authorized Unimac/BluOx dealers are supplied with BluOx conversion kits and our dealers make the BluOx modifications in their warehouses prior to installation in the field.
The result is that the customer receives their BluOx washer ready for operation. There are no special plumbing or electrical requirements, and no extra floor space is needed. All BluOx programs are pre-programmed into the washer, so you can just plug and play. (To learn more, click optimization)
Ozone injection
Ozone is first dissolved into a stream of cold water prior to entering the wash wheel. There are typically two fill rates. Fill rate A is a moderate fill rate which reaches the first water level with high levels of ozone in 1 to 2 minutes. Fill rate B is slower and brings in a continuous flow of supersaturated ozonated water throughout the wash cycle as the washer fills from low to high levels. Ozone levels can be varied and programmed into the wash formulas. This unique and proprietary design allows us to make a steady application of ozone throughout the wash cycle while alleviating the need for any filters and no need to replace any bubble stones, etc.
HealthCare
Certainly there is too much soil in healthcare linen to wash in only 2 fills, but we can typically cut the wash time for healthcare linen by a third and water consumption by 20 to 30% (about 1 gallon per pound in water/sewer savings).
Retrofitting Existing Washers
While BluOx modifications could be made to washers already in the field, we have elected to make BluOx available on new equipment purchased from BluOx or a BluOx authorized representative. This allows us to maintain the quality control that we feel is necessary for this technology to reach its full potential.
